How to Start a Blog

Taking action to start your blog or website is very exciting! I’m going to walk you through the steps of getting started with BlueHost. I have a step by step process to walk you through so you can start your blog today.

First, when I was first interest in having a website to showcase some samples of my work, I was focused on my time-consuming business. I chose to pay someone else to design and manage my site within a larger mother site. Pretty early on I came to realize my website designer was vastly overextended with no one to help her and it would take days to get a small update to my site. If I had an event or something timely I wanted on my site for promotional purposes, I had to wait my turn. Sometimes when she was in the middle of designing other people’s websites she would take a week to make a simple change. On top of that I was paying for each addition of images and changes. She was very good at what she did, but the overwhelmingly clear decision was that I needed and wanted to have my own site I could manage on my own.

Website #2, Are we there yet?

I next tried to design my own site with WIX. It had some wonderful templates and I was happy with it for a time, but as I grew, I needed to be able to utilize specific plugins to advance. I decided it was going to take time to work through a bit of a learning curve to make the huge gain of being self-sufficient in owning my own site in every way. I next chose to make the move to a WordPress site. WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms out there and has 59% of the market share at this time of writing this post.

With WordPress, I want to first note that there are two options for a blog:
Hosted: WordPress.com (I do not recommend)

I do not recommend hosted WordPress.com sites.
—You are not able to use plugins to customize your site.
—You have to pay to get additional design capabilities.
—You do not own a WordPress.com site and you grant them a world-wide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify and publish your content.
Heard enough? Ok! I expect you’ll want to use wordpress.org

Self-hosted: WordPress.org (recommended)

This guide below is for how to start a self-hosted WordPress blog with your own domain name and control to add plugins and AdSense or customize as you please.

4) Continue down to the “package information” section. You get the cheapest monthly rate by selecting 36 months. There is a money back guarantee. There are other services available on this screen. I do recommend the Domain Privacy Protection if you are using a home address for your site. You may not want your personal information available. In addition you will want to have back-up protection for your site, but there are a few different ways to go about this. I use the plug-in UpdraftPlus, which is free.
